Umbreon in Pokemon UNITE: A Defender Guide for Moonlit Support Players

Most Eeveelutions are remembered for what they do on a card or in a mainline battle, but Umbreon has a second career that many collectors never try: front-line protector in Pokemon UNITE. The Moonlight Pokemon joined the team-based battle game on May 25, 2023, and it quickly earned a reputation as one of the friendliest Defenders for new players. It is sturdy, it shields allies, and its toolkit maps neatly onto the patient, watchful personality fans have loved since Gold and Silver.

This guide covers how Umbreon works in UNITE, which moves to pick, how to think about your role in a match, and a few habits that make a big difference. No MOBA experience required.

Umbreon's role in UNITE

On the official Pokemon UNITE Umbreon page, Umbreon is listed as a Melee Defender rated Novice difficulty. Its stat spread puts most of its weight in endurance and support, with modest offense and mobility.

That tells you almost everything about the job. Umbreon is not there to rack up knockouts. It is there to stand between your attackers and the enemy, lock down threats, and keep teammates alive long enough to win fights.

What Umbreon does well:

  • Absorbs pressure and stays in fights longer than most Pokemon
  • Traps dangerous opponents so your team can focus them
  • Protects allies with healing and damage reduction
  • Shuts down shields, which is a quiet but powerful counter in many matchups

Where it struggles:

  • Low damage, so it relies on teammates to finish targets
  • Limited mobility, which makes it vulnerable to being kited
  • Less impactful if your team scatters and fights without it

Starting as Eevee

Like several evolving Pokemon in UNITE, Umbreon begins each match as Eevee and evolves into Umbreon at Level 4, according to the official page. The early game is about reaching that evolution quickly and safely. Eevee is not a strong fighter on its own, so stay near a teammate, collect experience from wild Pokemon, and avoid fights you cannot escape.

Eevee's early kit includes Swift, which shoots star-shaped rays that damage and mark opponents. Marked enemies give you a speed boost when you are close, and hitting them powers up your next basic attack. It is simple, but it teaches the core idea of Umbreon's style: tag a target, stay close, and keep the pressure on.

If the evolution itself fascinates you, our piece on Umbreon's moonlight evolution across the games explains how the friendship-at-night method became such a memorable part of the character.

Passive Ability: Inner Focus

Umbreon's Ability in UNITE is Inner Focus. When Umbreon would be stunned, shoved, or thrown, the effect is negated, and Umbreon briefly gains Unstoppable along with increased Defense and Special Defense.

This is a big deal for a Defender. Crowd control is how teams usually deal with front-liners, and Inner Focus lets Umbreon shrug off the first attempt. It does have an internal cooldown, so think of it as a safety net rather than permanent immunity.

First choice: Mean Look or Foul Play

At Level 4, when Eevee evolves, Swift upgrades into one of two moves.

Mean Look

Mean Look pins an opponent with a dark stare, surrounding it with a black zone it cannot leave for a short time. While Umbreon stays inside that zone, its basic attacks become boosted and deal more damage.

This is the signature pick for most players. It turns Umbreon into a jailer: you choose the most dangerous opponent, trap it, and your team gets a guaranteed window to focus it down. It is especially strong against slippery attackers and Speedsters who rely on escaping.

Best for: protecting your carry, shutting down divers, and coordinated team play.

Foul Play

Foul Play is a charge that damages and slows opponents it hits. If the charge connects, Umbreon can use it again to sweep its tail in front of itself, dealing damage, slowing, and shoving targets.

Foul Play is more about disruption and repositioning. It can push enemies away from your backline or into your team, but it takes more practice to aim well.

Best for: players who like peeling, displacement, and messy brawls.

Most guides favor Mean Look for its reliability, but Foul Play has its fans. Try both in standard matches and see which one fits how you like to play.

Second choice: Wish or Snarl

Umbreon's next upgrade offers a support pick and a brawling pick.

Wish targets an ally. For a short time the ally takes reduced damage, and then the wish "comes true" and restores HP. It is a wonderfully on-theme move for a Pokemon that evolves through friendship, and it makes Umbreon one of the more supportive Defenders in the game.

Snarl is a channeled area attack centered on Umbreon. While snarling, Umbreon gains hindrance resistance and a shield, though it moves more slowly. It is useful when you need to hold a choke point or soak damage in a crowded fight.

A common pairing: Mean Look with Wish. You trap the enemy's biggest threat and keep your own damage dealer alive while the team cleans up. It is straightforward, forgiving, and effective in random matchmaking.

Unite Move: Moonlight Prance

Umbreon's Unite Move is Moonlight Prance. Per the official description, Umbreon leaps upward, steals shields from nearby opponents, crashes down to immobilize them, and then absorbs a portion of any shields used inside the move's area.

That makes it one of the better counters to shield-heavy compositions. Use it when several opponents have just popped shields, or at the start of an objective fight when you want to lock the enemy team in place for your attackers.

Timing tip: Do not fire it at the first sight of an opponent. Wait until the enemy commits to a fight or an objective, so the immobilize lands on as many targets as possible.

Playing the role well

Pick a lane with a partner. Defenders are at their best alongside an Attacker. Your job in lane is to keep that partner safe while they farm and fight.

Lead, but do not overextend. Walk in front of your team so enemies have to deal with you first, but do not drift so far forward that you get surrounded alone.

Save Mean Look for the right target. The temptation is to use it on whatever is nearest. Instead, trap the opponent that is threatening your carry or about to escape with low HP.

Watch objective timers. Umbreon's crowd control is most valuable around Rayquaza and other major objectives, where one trapped opponent can swing the outcome.

Think about your team. Umbreon's support style lines up with the broader ideas in our Umbreon team-building guide, even though that article focuses on the main series games: protect your partners, outlast the opponent, and let others take the spotlight.

Common mistakes

  • Fighting alone as Eevee. You are weak before Level 4. Play safe until you evolve.
  • Wasting Mean Look on a tank. Trapping another Defender rarely accomplishes much.
  • Using Wish on yourself out of habit. It targets allies for a reason; put it on the teammate who is about to take burst damage.
  • Chasing kills. Umbreon's value is in protection and control, not in finishing low-HP enemies across the map.
  • Ignoring shields on the enemy team. Moonlight Prance is at its best against shield-reliant compositions, so watch for the moment they pop.

Balance patches adjust numbers in UNITE regularly, so treat any build as a starting point and check the latest official patch notes when something feels off.

Is Umbreon worth playing?

For new players, absolutely. Umbreon's Novice rating is earned: it is durable, its best moves are easy to understand, and it contributes even when you are still learning the map. For experienced players, it offers a satisfying protector role with real decision-making around who to trap, who to protect, and when to drop Moonlight Prance.

Most of all, it fits the character. Umbreon has always been the Eeveelution that guards its partner in the dark, and in UNITE it gets to do exactly that, one Mean Look at a time.
